Hailing from the Picardy region of France, the Berger Picard was developed by farmers and sheep herders of that region. Berger in French translates to shepherd. Its name naturally from the region it was from and the job it excels at. THe medium sized, well-muslced herding dog with the distinctively tall erect ears is also known as the Picardy Shepherd in some regions. Farmers and cattlemen of Picardy were quite proud of their native sheepdog. Loyal, observant, and energetic, the Picard became an eager partner working as a pasture dog.

The athletic Berger Picard craves time with human companions, making a great hiking or jogging companion. This lively farm dog even enjoys the occasional swim. The intelligent, assertive Picard responds quickly to obedience training. The Picardy Shepherd has the endurance to work a long day side by side with human companions, or train for agility and herding competitions. The rustic looking Berger Picard with shaggy eyebrows, beard, and mustache has been represented in tapestries and works of art in the past. Now, the rare breed is represented in stunning sterling silver dog charms and Berger Picard drop earrings.
