German Shorthaired Pointers are known for their keen scenting ability, versatility in hunting, and for being affectionate, boisterous, family companions. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a well balanced, athletic, energetic, and aristocratic sporting breed dog. Shorthaired Pointers have a thoughtful look of intelligence with just the right amount of enthusiastic animation. Pointers get their name from their classic and instinctive pointing stance; hunting is so strongly ingrained and correct for the breed.
The German Wirehaired Pointer has a distinctive appearance with its functional, weather resistant, wiry coat. The Wirehaired Pointer’s harsh, rough, thick coat and webbed feet give the GWP the added advantage of better insulation for robust swimming and late season or cold weather waterfowl hunters and the Wirehaired beard gives an advantage in field scenting/tracking. German Wirehaired Pointers are known for being a little more independent or strong willed (some say stubborn); GWP’s are rugged and busy but can be more serious and aloof with strangers than their Shorthaired cousins.

German Shorthaired Pointers are smart, all-purpose hunting gun dogs, great in water or in the field. Built for power, agility, and endurance, German Shorthaired Pointers thrive on exercise and being outdoors. Shorthaired Pointers are enthusiastic and excel at any activity an owner wants to do with them. German Shorthaired Pointers may be bred for function yet they are also attractive, affectionate and have an independent character that is still trainable and willing to please.
