Originally hailing from Cardigan Bay in the high country of Wales, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a special kind of dog. Thought to have been brought to the British Isles over 3000 years ago by Celtic tribal settlers from Central Europe, this agile and intelligent breed was originally used to protect children and flush out game from the countryside. Eventually they became helpful and hardworking farm hands, herding cattle and sheep for their masters. Their kind, gentle and never vicious nature makes them the ideal choice for helping to protect the herds and keeping them together as they graze.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is known for its prominent ears, kind eyes and friendly face. Did you know the name Corgi comes from the Welsh words ‘Cor + Ci’ meaning ‘Dwarf Dog.’ In Welsh folklore, warrior fairies rode Corgis into battle, and the legend continues that the Corgi’s markings are from fairy saddles and harnesses. Hence the “fairy-saddles” often found over their withers. Cardigan Corgis are capable of both speed and endurance. They are low-set, (short-legged but none-the-less handsome) small but powerful dogs. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is loyal, affectionate and smart, making them great herding dogs as well as allowing them to excel in agility competitions as well. The original work for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi was to lead the master’s herd in order to ward off potential predators and clear the way for grazing.
